Novak Djokovic beats Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Australian Open 2008 final to win his first Slam

Novak Djokovic beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-2) in the Australian Open 2008 final to win his first Slam. Even though I got to bed late last night, I dutifully set my alarm for 8.30am as that was the time it was here in England when the match was transmitted live. See how dedicated I am to my tennis viewing?

Djokovic said: ""I feel kind of relieved. I've played at least the semi-finals in every Grand Slam in the last year.. I was pretty close in the US Open, so probably today I was a bit nervous at the start."

If you think about it, he's been the world number three for a while now so it's about time he won a Grand Slam final. Federer and Nadal have had it their own way for too long so it's great to see a new face winning. Plus, what I like a Djokovic is that he has a big personality. He even joked about the Australian crowd's obvious support for his opponent, the chocolate-nippled Frenchman Tsonga: "I know the crowd wanted him to win more. That's OK, it's alright. I still love you guys, don't worry."

Aw, and he even managed a bit of shirtless celebrating in the locker room. What a lad!

Serena Williams and her glorious booty

Well, what do you call it? Serena Williams was confused momentarily at a press conference at the Australian Open this week when a reporter asked her what she thought about a TV commentator admiring slow-motion pictures of sister Venus's "posterior": "We say booty. I'm not quite sure about 'posterior'. I'll try to keep that in the back of my mind. 'What are you doing?' 'I'm shaking my posterior'."

I've seen Venus and Serena in action and they definitely both have a booty. All that jelly don't make for no high-falutin' posterior!

Aussiebum reminds us why we enjoy the Summer

As if it weren't enough to have to put up with our relentless wet and cold British Winter, those cheeky fellas at Aussiebum are teasing us with a reminder of their glorious Summer in Australia. I do like this new model they're using, he's fit as f*ck but so surly. He looks like such a badass.

"The Sunbaker" by Max Dupain

I found this beautiful photograph while browsing earlier today. It's called "The Sunbaker" and it was taken by Max Dupain, one of Australia's most famous photographers. I hadn't heard of him before but this image from 1937 is apparently one of his best known. I think it's one of the most beautiful and evocative photographs I've ever seen.

Max Dupain lived from 1911-1992 and had a long career as a commercial photographer, as well as establishing an early reputation as an art photographer. You can learn more about this talented photographer and view his work at this exhibition website.
