Whoo, I saw the Sex and the City film today! A girlfriend saw me after lunch and pointed out that it was the release day so why didn't we kick off for the afternoon and take in a matinée? A splendid idea I thought, so off we went to the cinema with some smuggled biscotti in my pants - I swear, they're going to start frisking at the cinema soon, it's not my fault they don't do fancy snacks!
I've been avoiding reading any news of reviews of the film so I'm not going to to go ahead a give away any spoilers but I do want to share some of my impressions of the film with you. First of all, if you liked the telly show, then you will definitely like the film. In fact, it pretty much plays out like four or five episodes strung together with the continuing threads of several different plot lines running throughout.
Things haven't changed much for the ladies: as usual, Samantha gets the funniest lines and the best laugh out loud moments; Carrie is totally self-obsessed; Miranda is as sour as ever, mean to poor Steve and seems hell-bent on ruining any chance of happiness; and Charlotte remains ever optimistic and romantic. Actually, I thought that Charlotte also had the funniest bits of physical comedy in the film but I won't spoil that for you. Just make sure you're not eating anything when you're about half way through the film.

Advocate cover guy Matthew Rhys

Brothers and Sisters actor Matthew Rhys is the November cover guy for Advocate magazine. When asked about having to make out with hot men as a part of his job, Rhys says:
"When you're in a relationship with a girl, you go to set and you go, ‘I’m going to make out with Jason Lewis.’ And they go, ‘Oh, you lucky thing,’ and they feel totally secure about it. But if you go to set and you have to make out with a hot blond girl, then you have the argument.”
I was watching the new series last night and I hate that the hot gay minister left for Malaysia and we've got bloody Scotty back on the scene. We like it when Kevin's with the hot guys!

So, what does it take to become a Gay Icon?

There's an interesting article on AfterElton about how exactly a celebrity sets about to become a Gay Icon, in particular, Grey's Anatomy actress Katherne Heigl. They ask John Epperson, who drags up as Lypsinka to imitate many of the great movie glamour queens, to described why certain women become Gay Icons:
“Gay men feel like outsiders in our heterosexual, patriarchal society.. Consciously or subconsciously they are often drawn to other people who are outsiders. This applies to female stars of all stripes, who are outside the realm of everyday life due to something that makes them unusual, whether it's their beauty or their sexuality or their vulnerability — qualities that come through on the screen, large or small.”
They go through the usual list of Gay Icons: Barbra Streisand, Better Midler, Joan Crawford, Bette Midler, Judy Garland, Liza Minelli, Margaret Cho, Kathy Griffin, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Sex and the City gals and Cher (of course, Cher!). They missed out on Madonna and Kylie though.
Anyway, this got me thinking. Apart from the predictable list above, who are your favourite Gay Icons? Moi, I love French singer Mylène Farmer. Her extravagent antics over the years have caught the eye of many a gay guy. As for Katherine Heigl, just the way she said "Sh*t!" when she won her Emmy the other week was enough to win me over. I love a glamour gal who knows how to cuss.

So I finally got around to watching The Devil Wears Prada

So I finally got around to watching The Devil Wears Prada. I've had it on rental for the last couple of weeks but didn't have time until today. I know that now it just looks like an extended episode of Ugly Betty, but I still rather enjoyed it. It's really just kinda an old fashioned Woman's Picture, like Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce or something, redone for the Sex and The City crowd.
I loved the Meryl Streep character. The dish is that she based the character on Anna Wintour but I don't believe that. Streep's Miranda Priestly is much prettier than Wintour. Wintour's a fug. If beauty comes from within, you just know that Anna's thoroughly rotten inside.

Jason Lewis strips off to advertise Aero Bubbles for the UK

Starting this week in the UK, a new advertising campaign on TV features Sex and the City and Brother and Sisters star Jason dressed in little more than a small white towel.
In the advert, Lewis steps out of the shower of his beautiful penthouse apartment and proceeds to give a seductive explanation of the reason for the bubbles in Aero:
"37 degrees Celsius, otherwise known as body temperature...is when the little bubbles in new Aero Bubbles dissolve and the chocolate melts even faster in your mouth. That, ladies, makes the pleasure even more intense…"
Philip Davies, Nestle Rowntree brand manager for Aero, said: "The campaign is very eye-catching and is sure to stimulate lots of discussion among our target audience. The campaign creative has tested incredibly well among our target audience of 18- to 30-year-old women and geared towards stimulating a reappraisal of the brand"
I don't know if they're really just targeting the ladies with this advert. It'll sure catch the eye of many a gay guy, or even a sexually confused Maxim reader too!
